Motor Principles and Motor Control

3 Days Instructor-Led

2.25 CEUs for Completion

This Motor Principles and Motor Control course is designed for maintenance technicians, industrial electricians, facilities mechanics, and safety supervisors whose work assignments involve installing, maintaining, or troubleshooting 3-phase AC motors and starter logicThis course is 3 days long in total.

This course establishes the essential safety and theoretical foundation for industrial electrical work, focusing on NFPA 70E compliance and the universal logic of Ohm’s LawLearners will transition from classroom theory to training stations, where they will apply systematic diagnostic methodologies to identify and resolve faults in complex electrical systems. What Each Participant Will Do:

  • Execute NFPA 70E Multi-Point Energy Isolation by performing LOTO and 3-Point voltage readings across 3-phase line feeds and control transformers.

  • Wire Dual-Voltage AC Motors by interpreting 9-lead AC nameplates, conducting winding resistance/rotation checks, and configuring high/low-voltage delta and wye connections.

  • Build Starter & Reversing Logic by translating ladder schematics into physical layouts, wiring 2-wire and 3-wire latching logic, and reversing starters with safety interlocks.

  • Apply NEC Article 430 Code Sizing to calculate and select branch circuit conductors (125% FLA), thermal overload relays (115–125% FLA), and short-circuit protection.

  • Troubleshoot Systems using a systematic troubleshooting process with multimeters, megohmmeters, clamp meters, and phase rotation meters to isolate control faults.

Who This Course Helps

  • Maintenance & Multicraft Technicians transitioning into specialized electrical troubleshooting roles requiring ladder logic schematic interpretation and systematic fault isolation on 3-phase machinery and control circuits.

  • Industrial Electricians & Automation Personnel responsible for sizing conductors, overloads, and OCPDs under NEC Article 430 and wiring 9-lead dual-voltage motors, magnetic starters, and Motor Control Centers (MCCs).
  • Facilities & Plant Mechanics servicing continuous-duty 3-phase AC induction motors driving industrial pumps, ventilation fans, compressors, material handling systems, and automated machinery.
  • Safety Supervisors & EHS Lead Staff requiring operational knowledge of NFPA 70E standards, LOTO, and multi-point voltage readings for verification across live AC distribution, control power transformers (CPTs), and power buses.
